Ocean Oddities

Join us in becoming an Ocean Steward and investigate the wonderful world of marine mammals! Explorers will craft harp seals, puzzle through activities, navigate through noise pollution as a rough toothed dolphin, and save a bowhead whale from entanglement!

Session I: Harp Seal- Did you know that Harp Seals are masters of disguise?  With a changing appearance throughout their life they have an incredible camouflage adaptation! During this session, learn about the life of a harp seal, ID their chameleon-like fur, and create a fluffy harp seal pup!

Session II: Bearded Seal –Bearded seals are known for their long white whiskers, but did you know they use these whiskers to forage for food?  Explorers will investigate the behaviors of the Bearded Seal and learn how they navigate through soft bottom sediment on the ocean floor through an interactive experiment!

Session III: Rough Toothed Dolphin – Underwater noise pollution is on the rise and disrupts the normal behavior of rough toothed dolphins.  Learn about the Sanctuary Soundscape Monitoring Project and how scientists are studying underwater sounds! Explorers will investigate acoustic monitoring hot spots, document their findings, just like a marine mammal scientist!

Session IV: Bowhead Whale – Did you know that PMMC has a large whale entanglement response program?  Learn about how our response team is trained and recent success stories!
